School History

A brief history

There has been a St. Chad’s school from as far back as 1809 when it was a Sunday School in Livery Street. It later went on to become the First Catholic School in Birmingham.

In 1823 the school opened for 73 children in Shadwell Street. It was demolished and St. Chad’s Boys School was opened and cost more than £1,000!

In 1871 a girl’s school and infant school was opened in Bath Street, costing £2,000.

In 1883 a larger school for girls and infants was built at the cost of £6,448. The money was raised from Sunday collections and house to house collections.

As time went on the school that we have today emerged, but we have records from the 1920s and 1930s telling us what life was like in those days, both in the school and in the area.

Life was very difficult for the children and their parents.  Click on the link below to see parts of the document.
