THE NATIONAL NUMERACY STRATEGY
KEY OBJECTIVES TAUGHT IN YEAR 1
- count reliably at least 20 objects
- count on and back in ones from any small number, and in tens from and back to zero
- read, write and order numbers from 0 to at least 20; understand and use the vocabulary of comparing and ordering these numbers
- within the range 0 to 30, say the number that is 1 or 10 more or less than any given number
- understand the operation of addition, and of subtraction (as 'take away' or 'difference'), and use the related vocabulary
- know by heart all pairs of numbers with a total of 10
- use mental strategies to solve simple problems using counting, addition, subtraction, doubling and halving, explaining methods and reasonng orally
- compare two lengths, masses or capacities by direct comparison
- suggest suitable standard or uniform non standard units and measuring equipment to estimate, then measure, a length, mass or capacity
- use everyday language to describe features of familiar 3D and 2D shapes

TERM 1
- Stories with familiar settings for shared and guided reading.
- Stories and rhymes with predictable and repetitive patterns.
TERM 2
- Traditional stories and rhymes.
- Fairy stories.
- Stories and poems with familiar, predictable and patterned language from a range of cultures, including chants, action-verses and rhymes.
- Plays.
TERM 3
- Stories about fantasy worlds.
- Poems with patterned and predictable structures.
- A variety of poems on similar themes.
THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CURRICULUM
The R.E. Curriculum followed by all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Birmingham is called 'LEARNING AND GROWING AS THE PEOPLE OF GOD'. It has five strands. In Year 1 the following areas are covered.

THE MUSIC CURRICULUM

- Chorus and at least first verse of hymns by heart. Hymns for specific occasions following the Liturgical Year
- Sing songs from memory developing control of breathing, dynamics , rhythm and pitch.
- Explore, organise and record vocal and instrumental sounds for musical effects within given structures.
- Share music making with others using symbols where appropriate.
- Respond to different musical sounds and discriminate between the ways the sounds are made.
- Talk about their own musical sounds and those of others.
