Year 5

THE NATIONAL NUMERACY STRATEGY

KEY OBJECTIVES TAUGHT IN YEAR 5

  • Multiply and divide any positive integer up to 10,000 by 10 or 100 and understand the effect.
  • Order a given set of positive and negative integers.
  • Use decimal notation for tenths and hundredths.
  • Round a number with one or two decimal places to the nearest integer.
  • Relate fractions to division and to their decimal representations.
  • Calculate mentally a difference such as 8006 - 2993.
  • Carry out column addition and substraction of positive integers less than 10,000.
  • Know by heart all multiplication facts up to 10 x 10.
  • Carry out short multiplication and division of a three digit by a single digit integer
  • Carry out long multiplication of a two digit by a two digit integer.
  • Understand area measured in square centimetres (cm2); understand and use the formula in words 'length x breadth' for the area of a rectangle.
  • Recognise parallel and perpendicular lines, and properties of rectangles.
  • Use all four operations to solve simple word problems involving numbers and quantities, including time, explaining methods and reasoning.

THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CURRICULUM

THE MUSIC CURRICULUM

Music is taught mainly through keyboard lessons during this year.

  • Vocal Skills
    • These are developed through singing lessons with other classes.
  • Religious Music
    • Listening to music from our Catholic heritage, Gregorian chorus , Palestrina for example and developing it as accompaniment in the liturgy.
  • Recorders are taught and children may audition for the school choir. Classical guitar tuition is available after school as private tuition.
  • Sing songs and rounds developing control of diction and textures created by performing with others.
  • Improvise, compose and record music in a variety of given structures to create a range of moods and atmospheres.
  • Rehearse, share and communictae compositions and performances with others using notations where appropriate.
  • Distinguish and discriminate between changes in character and mood in music.
  • Identify, distinguish between and discuss the musical elements used in music from different times and places.
